Everybody head over to MADCAP theaters on Saturday, Jan. 22nd for a special 35mm viewing of the 1980 horror classic, Maniac!

From MADCAP's website:

MANIAC (1980)stars Joe Spinell (ROCKY, THE GODFATHER, TAXI DRIVER) as Frank Zito, a deeply disturbed man haunted by the traumas of unspeakable childhood abuse. When these horrific memories begin to scream inside his mind, Frank prowls the seedy streets of New York City to stalk and slaughter innocent young women. Even as he begins a relationship with a beautiful photographer (Caroline Munro of THE SPY WHO LOVED ME), Frank continues to act on his vile compulsions. The film holds nothing back in depicting the atrocities of a human monster.  MANIAC earned instant notoriety in 1980 as the most graphic and disturbing of all slasher films, thanks to the gruesome special effects wizardry of Tom Savini (DAWN OF THE DEAD, FRIDAY THE 13TH). Gene Siskel and Roger Ebert called for their audience to boycott MANIAC, feminists protested the film's brutal violence, and other critics simply reviled the film as "sick" and "dirty."  This program is presented in 35mm.


This one ain't for the faint of heart, guys.  But it's good, I've seen it before and I can't wait to catch it in 35mm!

Check out The Dark Side of Dr. Seuss with Dennis Nyback

From the MADCAP website:
This could be called “What did you do in the war, Doc?”   For the second half of his long career Ted Geisel (Dr. Seuss) wrote hugely popular childrens books.  Before that he wrote for humor magazines and made money in advertising.   For a brief time in the 1940s he was in the US Army making gung ho propaganda and army training films.  Is there a correlation between attracting young readers and influencing the minds of adults?   With this program you can examine Dr. Seuss’ adult oriented work and make your own decision.  “Lovers of Dr. Seuss will take renewed delight in his whimsical and imaginative illustrations even as they may be disturbed by the attitudes reflected in some of his work.” People Magazine.  This program is presented in 16mm with an Introduction and Commentary by Film Archivist and Historian Dennis Nyback.

The last time I saw Dennis Nyback he was here for his Bad Bugs Bunny program, which was both hilarious and informative.

The Dark Side of Dr. Seuss with Dennis Nyback is at 7:00 pm and 9:00 pm, $10.  If you're in the area, you should definitely check it out.

Whorticulture at the Horror Sci Fi Fest

Come Hang Out with Whorticulture at the International Horror Sci Fi Film Festival - This Weekend!

Well, ghouls and boys, the Horror Sci Fi Fest starts tonight.  We'll be there pretty much through all of it, as long as MADCAP is open!  Check out their website for a film schedule & celebrity guests, but let's talk about the other events they're having that are worth your while.

Friday night is the Gore Girl competition:

This is ALWAYS fun.  This year it's a little different; they're holding a gore girl DEATH PAGEANT.  There's a runway, a Q&A, and this year's winner will become the face of next year's festival!  So if you think you've got what it takes, check it out!

By the way, check this page out for past gore girls.  Hot, bloody, deadly chicks?  THAT'S WHAT LIFE IS ALL ABOUT, FOOLS. 

Saturday night is the Beat the Geek competition:

This is the first one, so we can't say how awesome it is, but it sure sounds like fun.

"3 contestants will be selected to represent each genre (Horror & Sci Fi) and to challenge our resident geeks in a contest based on trivia questions."

Think you can beat these geeks?  You can't.  We know these guys.  They totally kick our asses at horror trivia. 

Both of these events are FREE, and face it, you ain't got anything better to do.  Plus we'll be there!

MADCAP Theaters does it again with a new $8 Double Feature

Hey Phoenix horror fans!  Come check out Halloween (1978) and Night of the Living Dead (1968) this weekend at MADCAP!  $8 gets you in for both!

Presented by the always awesome and seriously spooky Midnite Movie Mamacita!

Halloween (1978) In the small town of Haddonfield, Illinois, a teenage baby sitter tries to survive a Halloween night of relentless terror, during which a knife-wielding maniac goes after the town's hormonally charged youths. Director John Carpenter takes this simple situation and orchestrates a superbly mounted symphony of horrors. It's a movie much scarier for its dark spaces and ominous camera movements than for its explicit bloodletting (which is actually minimal).

Night of the Living Dead (1968). There's never been anything quite like George Romero’s original Zombie tour de force. The story is simple: Radiation from a fallen satellite has caused the dead to walk, and hunger for human flesh. Once bitten, you become one of them. And the only way to kill one is by a shot or blow to the head. We follow a group holed up in a small farmhouse who are trying to fend off the inevitable onslaught of the dead.

Both films are presented in 35mm.

Halloween is at 8 pm, Night of the Living Dead at 10.  Come on out and support independent theater!
